Cardiopulmonary Assessment
7:30 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.
COURSE
DESCRIPTION
This two-day course is designed for the medical surgical nurse
who is currently working on a telemetry/step-down floor. Information
gained during these two days will also assist the nurse who
wants to begin working on a telemetry/step-down floor. The
course is presented on an intermediate level and will cover
in depth the physical assessment of the pulmonary and cardiovascular
systems. The objectives will be met through lectures, beef
heart dissection, use of the heart sound's simulator, and
relevant case studies.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, the participants
will be able to:
- Describe the normal anatomy and physiology of the heart.
- Discuss the significance of the following:
*mean arterial pressure
*pulse pressure
*paradoxical pulse
*postural hypotension
- State the etiologies and pathophysiologies for edema information.
- Define preload, afterload, and contractility.
- Explain the normal physiological sources of normal heart
sounds S1 and S2.
- Describe the developmental nature of the arteriosclerotic
process and list 3 leading risk factors in development of
CAD.
- List the signs and symptoms commonly found in left CHF.
- Discuss MIs, the complications, subendocardial and transmural,
differential diagnosis.
- Identify the 4 antiarrhythmic groups of medications,
ACE inhibitors, inotropes, nitrates, anti-coagulants.
- Discuss normal pulmonary anatomy and physiology.
- Relate the assessed breath sounds to the physiologic
cause.
- Discuss the different treatment modalities for pulmonary
disease.

COMPLETION CRITERIA
- Attend both days of the course.
- Complete instructor evaluation and course post-test.

or when the class limit is reached. Registration is by mail
only and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing,
CEP# 07960, for 14 contact hours.
REFUNDS
The registration fee will be refunded provided notice of cancellation
is given in writing 14 days prior to course date. The registration
fee will be refunded in full if, for any reason, Continuing
Education Consortium cancels the program.
