Basic Hemodynamics

8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course covers assessment and intervention using hemodynamic parameters measured from pulmonary artery (swan), triple lumen, and arterial monitoring systems. Included will be monitoring system setup and maintenance; waveform analysis; pressure, SVR, CO value interpretation; SVO2 and continuous cardiac output monitoring.
This course is intended for nurses who are either unfamiliar or need a review of the fundamental concepts of Basic Hemodnymaics. Vasoactive drugs will be covered.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the physiologic determinants of cardiac output, arterial pressure and oxygen delivery.
  • Determine accurate balance and zeroing of a PA catheter.
  • Apply pulmonary artery measurements to clinical settings.
  • Discuss the accuracy of hemodynamic data in patients on the following modes of ventilation: SIMV, AC, PEEP, spontaneous.
  • Describe the hemodynamic effects of the following medications: amiodarone, lidocaine, digoxin, nitroglycerine, nitroprusside dopamine, dobutamine, milrinone, capoten, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and neosynephrine.
  • Describe several troubleshooting methods for PA catheter tracings.

REFUNDS
The registration fee will be refunded provided notice of cancellation is given in writing 14 days prior to course date. The registration fee will be refunded in full if for any reason, the Continuing Education Consortium cancels the program.
